Tharini Nagarkar
Biography
Tharini Nagarkar is a Hindustani classical vocalist who began learning music at the age of four, training under Pt. Nagaraja Rao Havaldar during visits to India and with Dr. Sumita Chakraborty in California from 2005 to 2010. After moving to India in late 2010 she came under the tutelage of Vidushi Amrutha Deshpande, the senior-most disciple of Pt. Vinayak Torvi, and received additional guidance from Pt. Torvi himself; she currently continues advanced training under Pt. Torvi and Sri Dhananjay Hegde. After returning to California in 2016 she continued to study with her gurus remotely and during summer visits to India, and began teaching classical music to young students in the Bay Area. Her vocal style is shaped by training in both the Gwalior and Kirana gharanas, the synthesis that is the hallmark of Pt. Torvi's lineage. She has performed across India and the United States, including at the Ramaseva Mandali Trust, Sapthak and Naadabrahma Sangeet Sabha in Bengaluru, Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha and Gaanabharathi in Mysuru, the Philadelphia Ganesh Festival and the Ustad Amir Khan Music Festival in California. Alongside music she is a third-year medical student at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
