Kalanidhi Dance

Biography

Kalanidhi Dance is a Kuchipudi school and company based in Bethesda, Maryland, in the Washington, DC area. Anuradha Nehru, an award-winning Kuchipudi dancer, teacher and choreographer, founded the school in 1991 and reopened it in Bethesda in 1999; she is now founder and artistic director emerita. In 2005 she formed Kalanidhi Dance Company together with Smitha Hughes, Chitra Kalyandurg and Silpa Nanan, described by the company as the first professional Kuchipudi dance ensemble based in the United States.

The company gives its mission as inspiring appreciation for Kuchipudi dance through artistic excellence, creative performances, high-quality educational programs and collaborations, and describes its work as exploring creative and contemporary ideas in the vocabulary of Kuchipudi while retaining the essence and integrity of the classical form. Full-length productions include Navarasa (2005), Rasa (2007), Bhagmati (2009), Siva-Shakti (2011), Bhoomi/Earth (2018) and Sundari Charitam (2022), alongside two collaborations with Opera Lafayette: Lalla Roukh (2013) and Les Fetes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour (2014). Kalanidhi has performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, Wolf Trap, Joyce SoHo in New York and the Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai, and has received support from the Kennedy Center and the National Endowment for the Arts; Nehru received a Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship Award in 2008. Current leadership includes Lavanya Thamire as managing director and Pragnya Thamire as assistant artistic director. For the 2025-2026 season the company hosts Odissi dancer Bijayini Satpathy as its artist in residence.
