Biography

Hirabai Barodekar (1905–1989) was a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Kirana gharana. Born Champakali in Miraj to Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, she trained first with her brother Sureshbabu Mane and then with Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan. A pioneer of concerts by women artists in India, she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1965 and the Padma Bhushan in 1970, and taught singers including Prabha Atre and Manik Varma.
