Biography

Ganesh and Kumaresh, born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, are a world-renowned Carnatic violin duo. Hailed as child prodigies, their musical journey began at the ages of three and two, respectively, under the tutelage of their father, Sri T.S. Rajagopalan, a dedicated violinist and teacher. Their rigorous training from a young age allowed them to develop a unique and innovative style, deeply rooted in the classical Carnatic tradition while also incorporating contemporary elements. They gave their first public performance in 1972 and completed over a hundred stage appearances before Kumaresh, the younger brother, turned ten.

Throughout their illustrious career spanning over four decades, Ganesh and Kumaresh have graced prestigious stages and festivals across the globe, including the USA, Canada, Germany, France, and Australia. They are celebrated for their exceptional technique, soulful interpretations, and creative improvisations. The duo has also composed music for films and dance productions, and their musical style, "Raga Pravaham," explores the intricate depths of Indian ragas and talas. A significant milestone in their career is Ganesh Rajagopalan's 2024 Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album as a member of the band Shakti for the album "This Moment".

Ganesh and Kumaresh have been honored with numerous accolades for their immense contributions to music. These include the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018, the Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu, and the Academy of Music Chowdiah Award. They have also been recognized as Asthana Vidwans of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and Sringeri Sharada Madhom. Their dedication to their art form and their ability to connect with audiences worldwide have solidified their position as leading exponents of the Carnatic violin.
