Gudalur Narayanaswamy Balasubramaniam (6 January 1910 - 1 May 1965), popularly known as GNB, was a pioneering Carnatic vocalist born in Gudalur, a small village near Mayavaram in Tamil Nadu. He completed his BA (Hons) in English Literature at Christian College, Chennai, and took up music training at Annamalai University under T.S. Sabesa Iyer before joining the diploma course at Madras University under Tiger Varadhachariar. Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar became his manasika guru and greatest inspiration.
GNB revolutionized Carnatic music by emphasizing laya (rhythm) control and developing a brigha-laden, brisk vocal style that reduced excessive gamakas while retaining their essence, making Carnatic music accessible to wider audiences. He was a gifted composer of over 250 krithis, creating new ragas and contributing to the expansion of the Carnatic repertoire.
GNB served as Deputy Chief Producer of Carnatic Music at All India Radio Chennai alongside Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. He later joined the Swathi Thirunal College of Music, Thiruvananthapuram as Principal in March 1964. His most prominent disciples include M.L. Vasanthakumari, the Radha-Jayalakshmi duo, Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman, and Trichur V. Ramachandran. His innovative approach to rhythm and melody continues to influence Carnatic musicians to this day.
