Deepak Ram

Deepak Ram is a South African-born bansuri flautist, composer, and producer of Indian origin (born 11 May 1960). He began training in bansuri and tabla under Sri Jeram Bhana in South Africa in 1975, later studying flute under Sri Suryakant Limaye in Mumbai. In 1981 he became a disciple of the celebrated bansuri maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, within the Maihar gharana tradition. His versatile playing melds Indian raga with jazz, blues, and flamenco. He has released nine solo albums and contributed to over sixty as a session musician. Deepak won a SAMA (South African Music Award) in 2000 for Best Instrumental Album (Searching for Satyam) and his bansuri features on soundtracks including The Matrix Revolutions, The Fast and the Furious, and Before The Rains. He has served as visiting professor of Indian music at UC Santa Cruz and lectured at the University of Durban-Westville.
