Biography
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (born 30 May 1954 in Kashimpur, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal) is an Indian tabla player of the Farrukhabad gharana. Born into a musical family and inspired by his uncle Pandit Biswanath Chatterjee, he began playing tabla at the age of five and became All India Radio's youngest performing artist. After brief study with Ustad Afaq Hussain Khan of the Lucknow gharana, he trained under Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh for three decades, absorbing the intricate grammar of the Farrukhabad style before drawing on other gharanas as well. He has accompanied most of the leading Hindustani musicians of his era, including the sitarists Nikhil Banerjee, Ravi Shankar, Imrat Khan, Budhaditya Mukherjee and Shahid Parvez, the sarod players Ali Akbar Khan, Amjad Ali Khan and Buddhadev Das Gupta, the flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia, the santoor player Shivkumar Sharma, and the vocalists Mallikarjun Mansur and Gangubai Hangal. He received the President's Award in 1970 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2002, became the first tabla player to perform in the House of Commons, and played at Rashtrapati Bhavan during US President Barack Obama's 2010 visit to India; he declined the Padma Shri in 2022. Beyond performing he is a teacher, researcher and tabla maker, and a regular artist at London's Darbar Festival, where in 2024 he played a tabla duet with his son, Anubrata Chatterjee.
