Niladri Kumar

Niladri Kumar is an Indian sitar player and composer from a five-generation lineage of sitarists. Rooted in the Maihar gharana, he trained under his father Pandit Kartick Kumar, a prominent disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar, and is known for inventing the zitar, an electric sitar variant.

Niladri Kumar: The Space Between the Notes (Salt Lake City)

Sitarist Niladri Kumar performs in Salt Lake City, accompanied by Satyajit Talwalkar, Sambit Chatterjee and Agnelo Fernandes.

The program is built around a live recording Kumar and tabla player Zakir Hussain made in Mumbai, their final performance together before Hussain's death, and honors that partnership. Kumar plays both sitar and the zitar, the five-string electric sitar he designed. Satyajit Talwalkar accompanies on tabla, Sambit Chatterjee on drums and Agnelo Fernandes on keyboards.
