Biography
Varijashree Venugopal, born 6 March 1991, is a Grammy-nominated Indian singer and flautist working in the Carnatic tradition. She was born to the musicians H.S. Venugopal and T.V. Rama, and was reported to be able to identify about 40 ragas at the age of one and a half. She began formal Carnatic training under Vidushi H. Geetha at the age of four, later studying rare compositions with Vidushi Vasantha Srinivasan and Vidwan D.S. Srivatsa; her music has been shaped most substantially by her guru Gaanakalanidhi Vidwan Salem P. Sundaresan. She is also a trained flautist, taught by her father H.S. Venugopal. Her first formal concert was at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja at the age of seven. From 2018 she began blending Carnatic music with jazz, coining the term "Carnatic Scat" singing, and has since collaborated with Jacob Collier, Snarky Puppy and Bobby McFerrin. In 2024 she received her first Grammy nomination, alongside Jacob Collier and Anoushka Shankar, for "A Rock Somewhere". She is a member of the Bangalore band Chakrafonics and has also sung and composed for Kannada television.
