Tari Khan

Ustad Tari Khan, born Abdul Sattar Khan in Lahore in 1953, is a Pakistani tabla player and vocalist of the Punjab gharana. He comes from a traditional Rababi family; his father, a classical vocalist, introduced him to music early. Captivated at six by the playing of Ustad Miyan Shaukat Hussain Khan, he formally became his student at fourteen. He is known for his command of the authentic Punjab tabla tradition and for the tone he draws from the instrument. He has accompanied Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and is closely associated with the ghazal singers Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh. He spent sixteen years in California, where he founded an academy to train tabla players. His honours include the Hazrat Amir Khusrow Award and Pakistan's Pride of Performance (2008).
