Sanjay Subrahmanyan (born January 21, 1968, Chennai) is one of the foremost Carnatic vocalists of his generation. He began learning music at age seven, initially studying violin with V. Lakshminarayana and vocals from his aunt Sukanya Swaminathan. He studied Carnatic vocal from Rukmini Rajagopalan for eight years and later trained extensively with Calcutta K. S. Krishnamurthi, during which period he developed his distinctive style blending tradition and modernity. He also studied with Semponarkoil S. R. D. Vaidyanathan from 2002 to 2013, during which time he explored vivadi ragas and rare compositions.
