Biography

Sandeep Das is a tabla player and composer of the Benares gharana, born in Patna, Bihar and based in Boston, Massachusetts since 2015. He began learning tabla as a child and trained for twelve years under Pandit Kishan Maharaj of Benares, one of whose favoured disciples he became. He made his debut at seventeen alongside Pandit Ravi Shankar and has since performed with leading figures across Indian music. He has composed for and toured with Yo-Yo Ma's Silkroad Ensemble since the group formed in 2000; their album "Sing Me Home" won the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2017, after two earlier nominations in 2005 and 2009. He has recorded more than thirty albums, held a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020, and founded HUM (Harmony and Universality through Music).
