Salar Nader

Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1981 to Afghan parents forced to flee during the Russian-Afghan war, Salar Nader settled in the San Francisco Bay Area at age five. At seven, he began studying tabla with Ustad Zakir Hussain, formally becoming his disciple at age twelve in a traditional guru-student ceremony. After high school, Nader attended the jazz program at Diablo Valley College and later joined the music program at San Francisco State University.

In 2004, Salar spent six weeks in Mumbai deepening his study of classical tabla. His guru then deemed him ready to begin teaching, and soon Nader had 75 students, including some of the most talented young tabla players in the United States. He has accompanied master musicians including the late sarangi virtuoso Ustad Sultan Khan, vocalist Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan, and sarode maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan on North American tours.

Salar has been an Artist in Residence at Harvard University, MIT, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, and Brandeis University. In 2019, he founded the Salar Nader Tabla Foundation, globally preserving Afghan cultural traditions through instruments and mentor scholarships. In 2025, he premiered and toured Zakir Hussain's "Murmurs in Time" with Third Coast Percussion.
