Biography

Prasant Radhakrishnan is a versatile saxophonist steeped in both South Indian Classical (Carnatic) and jazz disciplines, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The foremost disciple of Carnatic saxophone pioneer "Padmashri" Dr. Kadri Gopalnath, he trained for nearly a decade under his guru in the traditional gurukulam format of complete immersion. He released his first Carnatic album, Swara Sudha, at age 17 (2000), followed by Duality (2005), East Facing (2007), Kiravani: A Live Experience (2010), and Naada Samyama (2013). He studied jazz at the University of Southern California (2000-2004). After moving to the Bay Area in 2005, he founded VidyA, a Carnatic-jazz trio named among the top jazz acts by the San Francisco Chronicle, which released a self-titled debut (2008) and In The Source (2016). His other projects include The Alaya Project and The Movement Immigrant Orchestra, and he has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and others. He has lectured at U.S. universities including U.C. Berkeley, UNC Chapel Hill and the University of Chicago, and alongside his concert work he shares what he calls the path of Music and Silence for discovering innate peace and Self Realization.
