Biography

Pandit Abhijit Banerjee (b. 1964) is a renowned tabla virtuoso of the Farrukhabad gharana. He began training at age four under Tushar Kanti Bose and Manik Pal before becoming a disciple of the legendary Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, one of the most outstanding tabla teachers of the last century.

In 1984, sitar maestro Pandit Nikhil Banerjee selected him as tabla accompanist for his final European tour. His empathetic playing style has made him one of the most in-demand tabla players of his generation, accompanying masters including Ravi Shankar, Amjad Ali Khan, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and Parveen Sultana.

Abhijit also studied vocal music from Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty and violin from Guru Ma Annapurna Devi. He founded Dhwani Academy of Percussion Music with centers in Los Angeles, New York, and Kolkata, and serves as Head of the Department of Tabla at Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, a deemed university in Maharashtra, India.
