Biography

Born in Nagaon, Assam, Mitali Banerjee Bhawmik was introduced to Hindustani classical music by her mother Gori Banerjee. She received initial training from Sri Ajit Dutta and later studied extensively under Sri Biren Phukan in Guwahati. Moving to Kolkata in 1983, she studied under Vidushi Meera Banerjee before becoming a disciple of Padmabhushan Pandit V.G. Jog in 1984, whose vast experience across musical traditions helped her develop a unique style blending the best of multiple gharanas. Based in New Jersey since 1989, she directs Ethnomedia Music Studio and founded Raag-Rang, a nonprofit dedicated to community music education. She has performed across India, the US, UK, and Europe, and provided vocals for the film The Namesake. She received the 2021 Excellence in the Arts Award from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
