Biography

Mavin Khoo is a Malaysian dancer of the Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam, born on 30 April 1976 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His father, Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, is a leading Malaysian historian. Khoo started dancing at age nine and received intensive training from the legendary Bharatanatyam maestro Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman, as well as ballet training from Marian St Claire, Michael Beare, and Nancy Kilgour. He trained in the Cunningham technique at the Cunningham Studios in New York City and holds a Master's degree in Choreography from Middlesex University. Known for his imaginative choreography and frequent collaborations with Akram Khan, Mavin tours the world as one of the few solo male Bharatanatyam exponents. His company mavinkhooDance was founded in 2003. He served as artistic director of ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble from 2014 to 2017 and is currently a creative associate with the Akram Khan Company in London.
