Biography

Madhuvanti Bhide is a Hindustani classical vocalist, performer and music educator based in San Jose, California, who teaches Hindustani vocal music to students across the San Francisco Bay Area.

Born and raised in Pune, India, she took her first music examination at the age of 13 under the guidance of N.V. Diwan. At 15 she met Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar and trained under her for nine years, and she also studied under the late Pt. Rajabhau Deo. She received training for a brief period from Pt. Arun Dravid, an exponent of the Jaipur gharana. She obtained a BA in Performing Arts from the University of Pune in 1990, and in 1991 she was awarded the Sangeet Visharad degree by the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune.

Her repertoire is steeped in the Samagra Gayaki, the aesthetic synthesis of the Gwalior, Kirana and Jaipur gharanas developed by her gurus. Khayal is her principal form, and she also performs semi-classical and light music, including Hindi and Marathi geet and ghazals. Her albums include Ase Sur Gave and Arpan. She has lived and performed in the San Francisco Bay Area for over two decades.
