Biography

J.A. Jayant is a Carnatic flute virtuoso and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee, widely regarded as a torchbearer of the Flute Mali style of Carnatic flute playing. Born into a musical family, he began vocal training at age four under his grandmother, the late Vidushi V.S. Sundari, and took up the bamboo flute at age five under his grandfather, the late Kalaimamani Flute T.S. Sankaran, himself a disciple of the legendary Flute Mali (T.R. Mahalingam). A child prodigy, Jayant gave his maiden solo concert at age seven and has since performed close to 2,000 solo concerts and collaborative performances, including over 45 international tours across 25 countries. He is celebrated for his unique fingering and blowing technique that allows him to produce exquisite tonal quality even in the difficult lower octaves on bass and double-bass thick-walled bamboo flutes while maintaining impeccable shruthi suddham (perfect pitching).
