Biography

Gayatri Balasubramanian (born 10 May 1976) is a Carnatic vocalist and violinist who performs as part of the renowned Ranjani-Gayatri sister duo. Born into a musical Tamil Brahmin family, she had her initial vocal training from her mother Smt. Meenakshi Balasubramanian. Remarkably, Gayatri demonstrated an extraordinary ability to identify over 100 ragas by the age of two and a half, while also displaying a keen sense for complex rhythms. The sisters began performing as a violin duo before their teens and established themselves as top-class violinists of international repute. Since 1997, after becoming students of Padma Bhushan Sangeeta Kala Acharya P.S. Narayanaswamy, they have given vocal concerts alongside their violin performances. They have performed at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, Southbank Centre in London, Ravenna Festival in Italy, and Esplanade Theatre in Singapore. Their repertoire spans songs in Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati.
