Biography

Dr. Vidyabhushana is a prominent Indian Carnatic classical vocalist and composer from Karnataka, renowned for his renditions of Haridasa compositions, devotional songs, and traditional Carnatic music, with a career spanning over 50 years. Born on July 10, 1952, into a devout family in Dakshina Kannada, he entered monastic life at a young age, serving as a pontiff at the Kukke Subramanya Math for 30 years before renouncing monkhood in 1997 to pursue music full-time. He trained under influential mentors including R.K. Srikantan and T.V. Gopalakrishnan. Vidyabhushana specializes in Haridasa keertanas and Carnatic classical music, drawing deeply from the bhakti tradition. He was awarded the Sangeetha Vidya Nidhi by JSS Sangeetha Sabha in 1994, received a Doctorate of Literature from Hampi University for his thesis on music in Haridasa compositions, and was honored with the Sangeetha Kala Rathna by Bangalore Gayana Samaja in 2023. He founded Bhakti Bharathi Prathistana to promote devotional arts and Haridasa traditions.
