Biography

Damal Krishnaswamy Pattammal (1919–2009) was a pioneering Carnatic vocalist from Kancheepuram, one of the female trinity alongside M. S. Subbulakshmi and M. L. Vasanthakumari. She broke caste barriers for women in Carnatic music and was celebrated for her mastery of Muthuswami Dikshitar compositions. She received the Padma Bhushan in 1971.
