Biography

D. K. Pattammal was an influential Indian Carnatic musician and playback singer, renowned for being one of the first women from a Brahmin caste to perform Carnatic music publicly. She was part of the female trinity of Carnatic Music, along with M. S. Subbulakshmi and M. L. Vasanthakumari, and helped initiate the entry of women into mainstream Carnatic music. She was known for her encyclopedic knowledge of compositions, especially those of Muthuswami Dikshitar, and for her pioneering performances of complex ragam thanam pallavis.
