Arup Chattopadhyay

Arup Chattopadhyay is a tabla maestro of the Farrukhabad gharana, recognized as one of India's finest soloists and accompanists. Born in 1961 in Chandannagar, West Bengal, he first learned tabla from his father, Pandit Pankaj Chattopadhyay, who instilled foundational principles of rhythm and technique through rigorous daily practice. He then became a premier disciple of the world-renowned tabla maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh, studying intricate kaydas, relas, and gat patterns with an emphasis on clear articulation and a balanced integration of melody and rhythm. Awarded Top-Grade by All India Radio and Television, Chattopadhyay has had the honor of accompanying the legendary Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar on tours throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and India, including performances at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center. His solo album "Melody and Rhythm" was released in 2010 by Bihaan Music. He established the Pandit Arup Chattopadhyay Tabla Academy in Chandannagar to preserve and propagate the traditional art of tabla playing within the Farrukhabad gharana.
