Shashank Subramanyam, born on October 14, 1978, in Rudrapatna, India, is a renowned Carnatic flutist. He was initiated into music by his father and also received guidance in Hindustani music from the esteemed Pandit Jasraj. While he received vocal training, he is a self-taught flutist, having mastered the instrument on his own.
His career began at the young age of six in 1984, and he has since performed extensively across the globe. Subramanyam is known for his versatility, having performed in a wide array of settings from traditional Carnatic concerts to collaborations with jazz and symphonic ensembles. He has led his own groups and has been a featured guest with internationally acclaimed bands such as Remember Shakti. His discography is extensive, with over 80 CDs and 10 DVDs to his credit, showcasing his prolific and diverse musical journey.
A recipient of numerous accolades, Shashank Subramanyam was awarded the prestigious Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2022. He received a Grammy nomination in 2009 for his work with guitarist John McLaughlin. The Government of India honored him with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2017, and he was conferred the Kalaimamani award by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2001. He continues to be a prominent figure in the world of Indian classical music, captivating audiences with his virtuosic flute playing.
