Seventh-generation sarod virtuoso & eldest son of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
Amaan Ali Bangash was born on 12 July 1977 in Delhi, India, into one of the most storied musical dynasties in Hindustani classical music. He is the eldest son of sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, representing the seventh generation in the unbroken Senia Bangash lineage. Amaan was initiated into sarod playing by his father from early childhood and gave his first public performance at age eight. His international debut came in 1986 at the Festival of India in Moscow, followed by his UK debut in 1990 and US debut at the Asia Society in New York in 1991.
Amaan has performed at the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, Konzerthaus Vienna, and Sydney Opera House. In 2014, he performed alongside his father and brother at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo. He made his BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall in August 2022 and has been named an Associate Artist at Wigmore Hall. He frequently performs with his younger brother Ayaan Ali Bangash, and together they co-hosted Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee TV from 2001 to 2012.
Amaan has released numerous albums spanning classical and cross-genre work, and collaborated with artists including Derek Trucks Band, Evelyn Glennie, and the Gorillaz. He and Ayaan co-founded Sarod Records and co-authored the books Abba: God's Greatest Gift to Us (2002) and 50 Maestros, 50 Recordings (2010). His work on Peace Worshipers (2017) won a Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards.
