Biography

Abhisek Lahiri (born September 24, 1983, in Howrah, West Bengal, India) is an Indian classical sarod player whose style is shaped by three major gharanas of sarod: Shahjahanpur, Maihar, and Senia Bangash (Gwalior). He was initiated in sarod at the early age of six and trained under the tutelage of his father and guru, eminent sarod maestro Pandit Alok Lahiri, in the gurukul tradition. He is recognized today as a TOP Grade artist of All India Radio and Prasar Bharati.

Abhisek began performing publicly at the age of eleven. His first significant national recognition came in 1997 when Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia invited him to perform at the Saath Saath Festival in Mumbai. That same year, he made his international debut at the World Kinder Festival in the Netherlands, where he was hailed as a 'Wonder Kid'. This accolade led to concert tours across Europe, the U.K., the U.S.A., Canada, Sri Lanka, Japan, Bangladesh, and Singapore. Together with his father, he became the first Indian artist to perform at the European Parliament in France, at the Cannes World Music Day Festival, and at Canada Culture Days in Toronto.

Abhisek has performed at prestigious venues and festivals including the Darbar Festival in London, the Sacred Music Festival in Strasbourg, Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, the Dover Lane Music Conference in Kolkata, the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan in Jalandhar, the NCPA in Mumbai, and the Saptak Music Festival. He has served as a Cultural Delegate for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to Morocco and Cyprus.

His discography includes albums such as Sparkling Sarod (nominated at the Global Indian Music Academy Awards in 2010), Mood of Puriya Kalyan (nominated at GiMA 2014 alongside Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma, Zakir Hussain, and Rashid Khan), Genius of Sarod, Rhythm Redefined, Musical Sojourn, Parampara, and the Ionah Trio album. He formed the world music trio IONAH with Japanese guitarist Hideaki Tsuji and tabla player Parimal Chakrabarty, and is also part of the EMME (East Meets Middle East) collective based in Chicago.

Among his many honours are the President's Award from All India Radio, the Anun Lund Rej Memorial Award from the Norwegian Consulate, the Rashtriya Gaurav Award from New Delhi, The Telegraph School Award, a National Scholarship from the Ministry of Human Resources & Development, and the Ustad Afzallur Rahman Memorial Award from Bangladesh.
